Ben Jonson was born in 1572 and died in 1637. He was an extremely successful but controversial author, both on his own and in collaboration with others. He was apprenticed into his stepfather's trade as a bricklayer and thus missed out on a university education, but was still regarded as a highly complex and well-read poet. He was imprisoned at least three times - twice for political offence caused by The Isle of Dogs and Eastward Ho!, plays he had co-authored, and once for killing an actor in a duel. He was excused from the death penalty for the latter on a technicality - clergymen were exempt from punishment for such crimes, and clergymen were defined as anyone who could read Latin.
Volpone was performed by the King's Men (Shakespeare's company, formerly the Lord Chamberlain's Men) in 1606 and enjoyed a great success, as did his later comedies Bartholomew Fair, The Alchemist and Epicoene or the Silent Woman. He was never so successful at tragedy but, with the set designer Inigo Jones, managed to make great advances in the entertainment field of masques, writing many for King James.
